Why are they really demonstrating in Sheikh Jarrah?

In the last few weeks, the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah was featured in the headlines as a result of weekly demonstrations that take place in protest of the evacuation of Palestinian families from their homes and the entry of Jewish Israeli settlers into their homes. this short survey seeks to clarify the historical process of this matter until the issuing of the evacuation order, as well as the current political implications.

Making Bricks Without Straw: The Jerusalem Municipality’s New Planning Policy for East Jerusalem
This report issued by Ir Amim and Bimkom examines the municipality’s new planning policy, and its conclusion: current planning realities in East Jerusalem serve to thwart, de facto, nearly every Palestinian building plan, whether at the stage of approving the plan itself or later on, at the stage of issuing of a building permit.

The Arab-Palestinian School System in East Jerusalem- A Status Report

As the 2009-10 school year approaches, Ir Amim and The Association for Civil Rights in Israel present: "The Arab-Palestinian School System in East Jerusalem- A Status Report". The report shows that thousands of Palestinian pupils in East Jerusalem are denied access to free public education. Of those lucky enough to find space in the city public schools, thousands learn in unsuitable structures. The report also portrays the problematic way in which both the State of Israel and Jerusalem Municipality deal with this matter.  For the full report

Israeli Settlement in Palestinian Communities in East Jerusalem

Ir Amim's analysis has identified three urgent threats to a negotiated agreement in Jerusalem:
1. The accelerated process of Israeli settlement in Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem.
2. Plans for development of E-1, which would prevent future development of a Palestinian capital to the east, and sever its connection with the West Bank.
3. The proposed Jerusalem master plan (Jerusalem 2000), which threatens to re-engineer the demographic distribution of Palestinians and Israelis in East Jerusalem; and to isolate a number of Palestinian communities.
This document provides a snapshot of the first threat, highlighting recent developments. For the full report

Shady Dealings in Silwan

The neighborhood of Silwan is located at the heart of Jerusalem's historical basin. In recent years Silwan has undergone an accelerated process of Israeli takeover. significant parts of the area have been wrested away from the local population and onto the hands of private, right-wing organizations.
Silwan is a case study of Israeli policy in East Jerusalem. At the same time, there is a growing impression that Silwan is the keystone to a sweeping and systematic process, whose aim is to gain control of the Palestinian territories that surround the Old City.
This report aims to present to the general public the developments in one of the most sensitive areas in the city, to expose the problematic nature of the Israeli government actions in the area and to warn of the risks of continuing this process. For the full report

Ir Amim: the eviction of the two families in Sheikh Jarrah – a dangerous move for expanding the Jewish settlement in the neighborhood

Following the eviction of two Palestinian families, Ghawi and al-Hannoun from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah in the north-east part of Jerusalem, Ir Amim warns against this dangerous process that is designed to permit the expansion of the existing Jewish settlement in the area. The expansion of the existing settlement, next to the Shepherd’s Hotel complex in Sheikh Jarrah, constitutes an additional step in the plan to take control of Jerusalem’s Historic Basin by creating a contiguity of settlements, which will have grave consequences on the stability of the city and on its political future. In contrast to what has been claimed, the families of al-Hannoun and Ghawi, like the other Palestinian families that live in this compound, did not invade these houses, but rather have been living in them since the 1950s, as a result of an official decision of the Jordanian government. The State of Israel needs to reconsider the future consequences of this process, which allows Jews to claim ownership of property that belonged to them before 1948, but prevents the same claims from being realized by Palestinian residents. A general opening of ownership cases – Jews and Palestinians – from before 1948 could place the State of Israel in an impossible predicament in Jerusalem.
