Demolitions in the Bustan Area of Silwan: Alert and Background |

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, when international attention was tuned to the U.S. election results, Israeli security forces massed at midday in the Bustan area of Silwan – adjacent to the Old City in East Jerusalem – in order to enable the demolition of two Palestinian homes. The demolition, which drew a barrage of rocks from local residents, and the firing of tear gas, rubber bullets and perhaps live fire from security forces, marks a new stage in Israeli policies in the area. A stage that threatens to lead to the destruction of 80-90 Palestinian homes, and the displacement of hundreds of residents, making way for the expansion of the Israeli King's Valley Plan. House Demolitions Threaten Equilibrium in Jerusalem |

By Ilana Sichel, November 5, 2008, All Voices At 2:25 this afternoon, as the call to prayer echoed through the Old City and the adjacent Kidron Valley, and residents stood watching from roofs and through windows, the Jerusalem municipality demolished a single-story house belonging to Mohammad Siam. The house, located in the Wadi-Helwa/Al-Bustan neighborhood of the politically sensitive village of Silwan, just outside the Old City walls and in the Historic/Holy Basin, is in an area designated by the city as the site of a future national park that will form a ring around the Old City. Palestinian youth threw stones at officers throughout the set-up and demolition, and at 3 o'clock, five minutes after the demolition was complete, police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades. Candidates for city council clash during raucous east Jerusalem tour |

By Etger Lefkovits, November 3, 2008, Jerusalem Post A tour of Arab neighborhoods in east Jerusalem on Monday with candidates for city council from the Right and Left of the political spectrum erupted into a boisterous shouting match between organizers and hawkish participants over differing political views on the future of the city. The event, which took place just 10 days before municipal elections was initiated by an Israeli watchdog group, Ir Amim, that advocates Palestinian rights in the city. The aim of the tour was to highlight basic infrastructure needs of the 250,000 Arabs residents in east Jerusalem. For the full story
