Ir Amim's Activities |
Ir Amim, together with other organizations, uses legal advocacy and other means to address the crisis in public education in East Jerusalem. Since the year 2000, Ir Amim, along with other petitioners, has filed three petitions on the issue of public education in East Jerusalem to the High Court of Justice. In September 2006, Ir Amim and the Coalition for the Advancement of Arab Education initiated a series of public actions and media campaigns that aimed to raise public awareness of the problem and to pressure authorities in the municipality, the Knesset, and government ministries to provide solutions.
Prior to the start of the school year, the Coalition for the Advancement of Arab Education distributed information on the rights of Palestinian parents to send their children to Jerusalem municipal schools, monitored the Jerusalem Educational Authority for its compliance with the law and opened a hotline for parents who encountered difficulties in registration or enrollment.
The Coalition continues to monitor the Jerusalem Education Authority's compliance, performs site visits at schools and accompanies parents in their contacts with the authorities. In addition, the Coalition works with local parents committees and assists them in their appeals to the Jerusalem Educational Authority, whether through negotiation, or where necessary, demonstrations and strikes. |
