Legal Action

Since the year 2000, Ir Amim, along with other petitioners, has filed three petitions on the issue of public education in East Jerusalem to the High Court of Justice.  In August 2001, the Court determined that the Department of Education in the Jerusalem Municipality must register all school-aged children, even if there are no classrooms to serve them.  In the same case, the Ministry of Education and the Jerusalem Municipality obligated themselves to build 245 classrooms over a four-year period. However, from 2001 until 2005, only 13 classrooms were built. In the course of 2006, another 35 new classrooms were added to the 13 – for a total of 48 new classrooms.

As a result, in September 2005, Ir Amim and cooperating organizations petitioned the High Court to cite the Jerusalem Municipality and the Israeli Ministry of Education for contempt of court and to fine them accordingly. In August 2006, the last filing (to date) on this issue was submitted.
