Tour of northern neighborhoods

The tour of the northern neighborhoods examines how planning policies and barriers redefine the northern perimeter of East Jerusalem and the status of its residents.  As a specialized tour focusing on a particular segment of East Jerusalem and its unique geo-political features, it is intended for participants who already have some familiarity with the political issues concerning Jerusalem.
The Palestinian neighborhoods on the northern perimeter of East Jerusalem serve as a link between Ramallah and Jerusalem. For this reason, Israeli policies being applied in this area and the processes taking place there have far-reaching significance in terms of being able to connect East Jerusalem with the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, with serious ramifications for reaching a political resolution on Jerusalem and the conflict at large.
The route of the Separation Barrier along the northern perimeter is twisted and contorted, leaving eight Jerusalem neighborhoods detached from the city by the Barrier and fully isolating nearby areas in the West Bank. The roads – including those slated for construction – enable contiguity of the settlements with East Jerusalem while dividing and splitting up this section of East Jerusalem. Geographically, the Israeli and Palestinian neighborhoods are particularly close together along the northern perimeter, with Israeli neighborhoods increasingly encroaching onto Palestinian land.  The two groups are therefore closely intermingled geographically and building plans play an important role in molding the relationship between the neighborhoods and their residents.
